Puppie Chaser

I think we can all agree that this blog is in desperate need of a puppie chaser after that last post about the Khmer Rouge and S-21. (A “unicorn chaser”, or in this case a puppie chaser, is a concept created by Boing Boing editors as an antidote to blog postings containing disgusting or shocking images.) Since we haven’t encountered any unicorns and forgot to take pictures of the adorable puppies we played with on the beach in Ha Long Bay, we give you the beauty of Banteay Srey instead.

This is one of the temples further away from Siem Reap and the masses of tourists. There are still plenty of visitors sharing your experience but it’s nothing compared to sunset at Angkor Thom. The excellent guidebook we had bought from one of the hundred touts darting around the temples proclaimed Banteay Srey one of the most beautiful temples thanks to its intricate carvings and pink colored sandstone. Because of this and its smaller proportions – it wasn’t built by the king – the name Banteay Srey often gets mistakenly translated as ‘Temple of Women’. Whatever you want to call it, it certainly is a gem:

Each tower has a uniquely carved lintel, depicting a different story

The originals as well as the copies of these figures (sometimes just the heads) have been stolen many times.
